It’s Time to #ComeClean

Many Americans have been taught to fear nuclear energy.

That’s expected, even if it’s based on misunderstandings. But now we can share the truth, and learn why most Americans support clean nuclear energy. After all, there’s a lot to like.

How to respond to common misperceptions:

  • That’s a common question. Nuclear is actually one of our safest and most regulated forms of power. Working in a nuclear plant is safer than working in a grocery store. Operators have to retrain every six weeks, for a total of at least 160 hours per year!

  • It’s actually not waste! Almost 95% of spent nuclear fuel can be recycled. France does this - and they get nearly 70% of their energy from nuclear. And no, it’s not green slime. Spent fuel is a solid material, stored in ultra-strong containers built to withstand extreme conditions. Heck, you can have a picnic next to one.

  • That stuff coming out the cooling towers? Water vapor, same as the white clouds you see in the sky. Producing nuclear power has zero carbon emissions and zero pollution.

  • If you’re talking about spent fuel rods, those are stored so safely you could picnic next to them. But getting an x-ray at the dentist or flying in a plane exposes you to more radiation than working in or living near a nuclear power plant for an entire year.

  • Those renewables are great, we just need more! Since they don’t run continuously, wind and solar can’t meet total minimum energy demands, even with batteries. They need to be accompanied by a zero-emissions source that can provide the rest of the power for an electrified economy. Nuclear can do exactly that.

  • You get more radiation from eating a banana than living next to a nuclear power plant for a year!
